Augusta - Irl E. Withee, 85 of 9 Murray St., died Monday night at the Kennebec Valley Medical Center, Augusta division, after a brief illness.
He was born in Augusta, July 13, 1898 the son of Everett and Isobel Pratt Withee. He was a graduate of Cony High School class of 1916.
He had been employed by the Augusta Trust Co., and had been Receiver of the company. In 1941 he became assistant bank examiner for the State of Maine, later Bank Examiner. In 1954 he was named Deputy Bank Commissioner and in 1967 became the acting Bank Commissioner until his retirement in 1969. After retirement he liquidated Oxford County Savings and Loan, and from 1969 to 1981 was a member of the Board of Directors and assistant to the president of Border Trust Co., of Jackman.
He had been a member and past member of North Augusta Grange, member Pomona Grange, State and National Granges, a member and past president of the Augusta Rotary Club, member and past chairman of the Board of Trustees of Winthrop Street Universalist Church, a member of the Augusta Lodge AF & AM Cushnoe Chapter 43 Alpha Council of Hallowell, Trinity Commandry, Scottish Rite Bodies and Kora Temple Shrine.
He also served as an alderman and councilman for the city of Augusta, was a member and past chairman of the Board of trustees of Fort Western, member Retirees Chapter of the Maine State Employees Association and a member of the Maine Association of Retirees.
He was a volunteer worker for the Maine Lung Association for which he received a Volunteer of the Year award.
He and his wife, Velma Knowles Withee recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
He is survived by his wife of Augusta and several cousins. He daughter Mrs. Joan Gallant died in June 1983.
Friends may visit Saturday from 3-4 and 7-8 p.m. at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home 1 Church St., Augusta. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Winthrop Street Universalist Church, Augusta.
