Raymond Sterling Wethey
1907-1999


Beverly, Mass. - Raymond Sterling Wethey, 92, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999 at Blueberry Hill Healthcare, Beverly, Mass.

Mr. Wethey was born in Auburn on May 18, 1907, the son of Alfred and Mabelle (Sterling) Wethey and was the husband of the late Gladys (Axton) Wethey.

Mr. Wethey was a member of the Class of 1931 at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in troy, studying civil engineering. He worked as a design engineer for International Harvester, American Locomotive and Columbian Rope Co. in Auburn before moving his family to Fort Lauderdale, Fla. in 1948.

Here he was a civil engineer laying out slips in Port Everglades and then started his own commercial real estate business.

He returned to Upstate New York in 1964, continuing with real estate and working as a real estate appraiser for the Equalization department of the State of New York.

In 1978 he founded Lakeland Travel service which began in Auburn and moved to Beverly, Mass. In 1980

In 1995 he and his late wife moved to Beverly, Mass.

Mr. Wethey enjoyed his family, his many travels throughout the world, gardening, watching the stock market, and especially his summer home on Skaneateles Lake. He was a long time member of the Rotary Club of Auburn and a Paul Harris Fellow.

He is survived by his daughter, Doreen Wethey Ushakoff of Beverly, Mass.; four grandchildren, Meriden Ushakoff Huggins of Sedro-Wooley, Wash., Alex Ushakoff III and Valerie Ushakoff of Beverly, Mass., and Nicole Ushakoff Jurczyk of Newark, Del.; four great-grandchildren, Kristin and Hillary Huggins and Katarina and Thomas Jurczyk; and nephews, Don Prittie of Sioux City, Iowa and Wayne Prittie of Bemus Point, N.Y.

He was predeceased by a sister Beatrice Wethey Prittie.

A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13 in the Lee Moody and Russell Funeral Home, 9 Dane St., Beverly, Mass.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Auburn Rotary Scholarship Fund, Box 446, Auburn, N.Y. 13021.
