G.E. Wethey Of Weedsport Dead at 83

George E. Wethey, 83, Weedsport businessman, past fire chief and active member of the Masonic lodge, died this morning at Auburn Memorial Hospital after a long illness.

He is survived by a son, Ernest of Weedsport; two granddaughters and several great grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements by the Kelly Funeral Home are incomplete.

The Wethey store on Furnace Street will be closed Friday and Saturday due to the death of Mr. Wethey.

George E. Wethey dies in Auburn

George E. Wethey, 83, a resident of Weedsport since 1917, died yesterday in Auburn Memorial Hospital after a long illness.

He formerly operated a hardware store here, retiring in 1964. The business is now operated by his son.

Mr. Wethey was a member of the Weedsport Fire Department.

He was a member of the Cayuga County Past Chief’s Association.

He was a member of the Weedsport Lions Club. Mr. Wethey was a member of Weedsport Lodge F&AM of which he was master in 1939 and of Mor... Chapter RAM. He was illustrious master of King Hiram Council, commander of Salem Town Commandry, Knights Templar and in 1954 received the honorary degree of Knights of York Cross of Honor. This is the highest honor bestowed by the York rite and is given only to persons having held the highest office in all four bodies. He was member of the Scottish Rite of Syracuse, Damascus Temple, Shriners Aaonms of Rochester and the Auburn Shrine Club.

Surviving are a son, Ernest of Weedsport; two sisters, Mrs. George Corfield of Lincoln, Neb., and Miss Inez Wethey of Ithaca; a brother, Howard Wethey of Port Byron; two granddaughters and five great grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Kelly Funeral Home, the Rev. William Fairhurst Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery at Port Byron.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Wethey Services Scheduled Sunday In Weedsport

Funeral services for George E. Wethey who died Thursday in Auburn Memorial Hospital will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Kelly Funeral Home in Weedsport. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Port Byron.

Mr. Wethey was born in Port Byron 83 years ago. He had lived in Weedsport since 1917.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 tonight and from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 pm. Saturday.

The Cayuga County Firemen’s County Fire Chief’s Association will meet at the funeral home at 8 tonight.
