Col. Holbrook was born July 30, 1906 in Boise, the son of Major General and Mrs. L.R. Holbrook. He married Mary Sutterle on July 16, 1934, in Shanghai, China. He is the descendant of one of Idaho's earliest pioneers, his grandfather, Frank R. Coffin, who came to the Territory of Idaho in 1863. His father, General Holbrook was stationed at the Old Boise Barracks with the Fourth U.S. Cavalry in 1898 and 1899. Col. Holbrook was commissioned in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1930, after attending West Point and Air Corps flying schools at Brooks and Kelly, in San Antonio, Tex. He served overseas during World War II in the China-Burma-India Theater as assistant air attache in Chunking, China and later in Formosa and Spain.
Col. Holbrook accompanied a mission to China in 1932 to help organize and train the Chinese Air Force. He was serving with the Air Force Ballistic Missile System at the time of his retirement on Jan. 1, 1964. He held the rating of command pilot in the U.S. Air Force and was awarded the following decorations and service medals; American defense Service Medal; American Campaign Medal; Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with one battle star; World War II Victory Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Air Force Longevity Service Award with four Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters; Armed Forces Reserve Medal; the Order of the Cloud and Banner of the republic of China; Medal of Honor of the Chinese Government; and the Chinese Air Force Pilot's Badge.
Survivors include his wife of Boise; a daughter, Mrs. Edgar Roy Stocking of Boise; a son, Lucius Roy Holbrook III of Boise; two brothers, Major General Frank C. Holbrook, U.S. Army Retired, of Boise, and Capt. John A. Holbrook, U.S. Navy, Retired., of Honolulu, Hawaii; and two nephews.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jack R. Davidson, Col. Charles C.W. Allan, U.S.A., (Ret.), Col. James E. Maloney Jr., U.S.A. (Ret.), E.R. Hopper, C.J. Northrop Jr., and Col. Clarence H. Bragg, U.S.A. (Ret.).
Friends may call at the Summers Funeral Hoe from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. today. The family suggests contributions be made to the American Cancer Society.
