Cathy Edwards Collins
1953-2001

Susan Catherine (Cathy) Edwards Collins, 47, of 120 Hampton Court, departed this life on March 21, 2001.

A native of Athens, Cathy was born September 24, 1953. She was a graduate of Clarke Central High School. She attended the University of Georgia, where she was a member of the Red Coat Band. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from North Carolina Wesleyan College and her Master of Social Work degree from U.N.C., Chapel Hill.

Cathy was employed for over 15 years as a Social Worker serving in Foster Care Placements and Home Study Evaluations with the Wake County Department of Social Services, Raleigh, N.C.; Foster Care Unit, DeKalb County, GA; and Child Protective Services, Barrow County, GA.

She was a member of the National Association of Social Workers, the Academy of Certified Social Workers, First Baptist Church, Athens and its Disciples Sunday School Class. She was a former member of the church choir and the Optimist Club of Athens.

Cathy was preceded in death by her father, Mahlon Edwards of Athens. She is survived by her daughter, Christine Collins of Athens; mother, Dorothea Edwards of Athens; sister, Mahla Swinford of Newport News, VA: nephew, Charles Swinford of Newport News, VA; aunts, Mary Underwood of Naples, FL, Charlotte Head of Havana, AR, and Carmel Edwards of Albany, GA; plus many cousins.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 24 at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 355 Pulaski Street, Athens, with the Rev. Doug Ivey officiating. Members of the Disciples Sunday School Class and the Optimist Club of Athens will serve as honorary pallbearers. Family will receive friends immediately following the service at First Baptist Church. Burial will follow at 4:30 p.m. at Westlawn Memorial Cemetery, Walker Park, GA Hwy. 11 North, Monroe.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church (for Disciple Class mission projects); to the American Cancer Society; or to the Christine N. Collins Educational Fund (Mahla Swinford, trustee), c/o Bank of America.

Arrangements are by Bridges Funeral Home, Athens.
